Expecting a little bundle of joy? Has the baby gear already begun to take over your home? Having a green nursery doesn't have to entail solar-powered mobiles and cloth diapers. The easiest way to be an eco-friendly parent-to-be is to keep the products and gear to a functional minimum. Here are a few tips to fight the clutter while you still have time:
1. Get a friend to put together your registry with you, someone who has young kids. They'll be sure to remember which items are essentials and which are just going to take up space in the nursery.
2. Avoid buying too many bins and organizers. As your baby grows, so will the toy collection. Hiding these items in bins will cause you and your child to forget they exist, and hence think you "need more stuff".
3. The crib itself and the bedding should be easy to remove and clean. You don't need more than two fitted sheets, so you can afford eco-friendly, quality, organic sheets, like Honeyami's Social Butterfly or Night Owl bedding.
4. If you're not sure you can use a shower gift, return it for a store credit before the receipt expires. You'll be happy you have these funds for diapers, formula, or other ongoing needs once the baby is born.
5. Stay away from cheap toys. When your child is older, she'll be asking for plenty of poor-quality, throw-away stuff you will reluctantly buy her. While she's still an infant, surround her only with a few safe, organic toys that are both comforting and stimulating, like the Flexi Lamb from Wonderworld Toys, a stuffed animal with elongated body parts which easily move in a wire-like fashion, staying in the various positions until baby moves them again.
