Want to save some cash as well as the planet? Here are a few ways to humanely euthanize both (free-range) birds with one stone:
1. Buy less stuff. Yup, this one is pretty much a no-brainer. The less you buy, the less demand for new stuff is created.
2. Spend more time in the kitchen. Food that you cook yourself creates less demand for pre-made, pre-packaged, shipped, distributed fare. It is also less costly than convenience food. Long story short: Can't stand the global warming? Stay in that kitchen!
3. Use less, pay less. Whereas certain green practices can seem costly, like installing solar paneling on your house, or converting your pool to a salt-water system, many earth-friendly changes are also wallet friendly. Using less gas, slashing your electric bill (by unplugging appliances, turning off lights, conserving air-conditioning, etc.) and using less water are examples of such win-win opportunities.
4. Second time's a charm. Buying from thrift or consignment shops, donating used goods to charities, and having garage sales all promote re-use at its most practical. Recirculating clothing, household goods, books, and more keeps this stuff out of landfills, and prevents factory production of similar goods. And, of course, second hand goods are cheaper too.
